Coffee and the Global Economy

Coffee is in second place for the most valuable traded commodity. Approximately there are 25 million coffee farmers and workers, in over 50 countries around the world. Traditionally, coffee farmers are kept in a cycle of poverty and debt, designed to produce cheap labor and keep consumer prices low. Worldwide more than 25 million small producers rely on coffee production for a living. The coffee industry is most popular in countries like Brazil, Columbia and Vietnam. On average the United States consumes 66 billion cups of coffee each year. The United States is the leader in coffee consumption. The value of imported and exported coffee has steadily increased over the past few years. Globally coffee production makes up to 42.5 billion dollars on the market.
