What is becoming more popular today is the use of single serve coffee maker. People are finding that it is a lot easier to make just one single cup of coffee, rather than make an entire pot of coffee and waste it. Today the biggest producer of single serve coffee, is Green Mointian. In 2006 Green Mountian bought Keurig, and is has been steadly increasing sales as the fenomenon of single serve coffee grows. A recent study found that 85% of Americans are making their own coffee at home, and a large percentage of people are using single serve coffee makers such as Keurig.

Starbucks vs. Caribou

Even though Starbucks makes more money, is worth more, and is more popular, caribou continues to compete at the same level. Both companies compete with each other for the best prices, the best coffee, and better food options this all helping the economy because coffee lovers continue to spend money at both Starbucks and Caribou. The love of coffee in the United States helps the global economy because people are buying coffee from either Starbucks or Caribou, and then both of those companies are buying coffee that is Fairtrade certified and brings revenue to coffee producing countries.

Starbucks and the Global Economy

Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz said that his company plans to open thousands of stores in India in the near future. By doing this, India will become one of the two largest coffee markets outside of the United States and China. Starbucks hopes to have thousands of stores opened in India in the future. By Starbucks hopefully opening new stores in India, it will help their economy while also benefitting the company. It will help to create new jobs, the economy can always be helped by adding new jobs.

History of Caribou

Caribou Coffee is a Minneapolis based company, and is the second largest company owned and operated coffeehouse chain. Caribou is growing rapidly in the up and coming gourmet coffee industry. Kim and John Puckett are the founding couple of Caribou Coffee Company, the opened their first coffee house in 1990s. They entered a competitive market of gourmet coffee, with Folgers, Kraft General Foods, and of course Starbucks. Now caribou has over 610 locations in the United States and overseas, and is becoming very popular.

History of Starbucks

Starbucks is one of the most well known coffee stores in the world. The first Starbucks opened in 1970 in Seattle. In the 1990s Starbucks starts to expand out of Seattle, first to the United States and then to the rest of the world. In the 2000s Starbucks continues to grow as a popular coffee shop. Starbucks has more than 15,000 locations in over 40 countries. Starbucks has been offering Fairtrade coffee since 2000. Starbucks is now one of the largest purchasers of Fairtrade certified coffee in the world. Starbucks buys coffee this way because it helps foster a better future for farmers, and also helps the environment.

Coffee Prices

            Coffee accounts for nearly half of the total net exports from countries from Latin America, Asia, and Africa. In 2001 coffee prices had dropped to their lowest levels since 1960. This drop in prices impacted more than 25 million homes in coffee producing countries.  In the 1990’s Vietnam became a major coffee producer and exporter, but to the expense of smaller producers in other countries. The United States is now one if the top coffee consumers.
